kitchen composting and cleanup
Back to Main MenuCelebrationsFraud PreventionManage Your AdPlace an AdLife is so busy these da Burberry Outlet Online ys that little time savers seem big. Here a trio of them: a less messy way to cook fish; a sensible compost bin and a quick, biodegradable trash receptacle that goes anywhere and stands up to the job. Bring it on.In the bagI thought about deliciously saved time when my sister, Pam, looked up from the kitchen sink, scanning for pots and pans to wash after our fish dinner.Ha, there weren any. I had filled PaperChef parchment paper bags with pieces of fresh halibut (from Kate Fish at West Side Market, Cleveland), sliced zucchini and sweet red pepper. I seasoned all with olive oil, salt and pepper and topped with minced shallots and garlic. After folding the bag closed, a 15 20 minute run through a 400 degree oven cooked it all. (The makers say the bags can take up to 425 degrees.)I used flat sheets of parchment before, feeling a little clumsy on the fold. Bags are already folded or sealed on three sides, and they steam/poach/roast food papillote, a form of cooking that lets good ingredients speak for themselves. (Pesto and lemon slices were passed for garnish, with few takers.) There was a bit of liquid seeping out the bags when I removed them from the oven, so I was glad I placed them on a rimmed cookie sheet and slid them directly onto the plates. A quick rinse and the cookie sheet was clean. And we went back to a better time.Later, I discovered something else that cooks en papillote: Popcorn. Yes, kernels in the bag, no chemicals added. Eureka. In the bucketI been working on my composting style for a while now. Anyone increasingly sickened by the sight of landfills will understand. The under counter bucket just wasn working. Out of sight, out of mind, but not out of smell. And I didn want a crock with a perforated top that breaks or helps create the next generation of fruit flies or has a carbon filter to replace. I thought about worm composting layering food waste with newspaper, emptying the castings drawer into the compost bed, returning it to the unit, making sure the worms had enough food and the right kind. Maybe in retirement. This OXO model is the right Burberry Outlet Online fit, so far. Its sleekness isn all looks. I like filling it during meal making without having to step away from the counter. The lid sits tight when closed, flips open flat for full access and pulls off if you need to slip it into the dishwasher. Composting is never duty free, though. You really have to give it a shake to ge Burberry Outlet Online t sloshy items such as wet coffee grou Burberry Outlet Online nds out. But the smooth finish pays off. A quick rinse and it ready for re filling. The bucket is large enough to hold three to four days worth of veggie scraps for a family of two. When it too full and the lid no longer closes completely, you know it heave ho time. Call first. In the trashBefore there were plastic bags . . . wait . . . let not go there. Let talk about a different problem, such as being in a place with a shortage of trash cans. This year neighborhood clambake was one of those places. Bag handles strapped around the fencepost did not help those dutiful members of the cleanup crew who had both hands full. Next year, we could bring some Clean Cubes, a biodegradable drawstring plastic bag already lined with a heavy duty paper bag that keeps both standing and open. Think picnics, clambakes, tailgating, birthday and Halloween parties. You can even label recyclables with a permanent market. Maybe you’ll get more help from the crowd.
